Sometimes… the city of angels will confuse, frustrate, discombobulate! She’ll spin you upside down and all around until you don’t know which way is up & which is down. She has two sides, two faces, two personas… one of light and magic and one of sadness. She is not easily understood, figured out, or detailed in a handful of words. No, the city of angels is complex and a bit of a conundrum, perhaps even a contradiction at times. Though still, this sprawling landscape is home to millions of amazing humans… artists, creatives, intellectuals, storytellers, life-savers… people of every background, every creed, color, race, religion, orientation, ability. Someone once told me don’t ever describe LA as a melting pot, because when things melt together, they seem to erase or overtake smaller traces of ingredient in the pot; rather, think of LA as a ocean of personalities, of human beings all floating by and coalescing in the most beautiful way. For this city is truly unique and there are strange, fascinating, and fantastical individuals (and places) around every corner. The next time you get in your car and you’re about to merge on to your local freeway (or you’re just cruising side streets) consider this… while it is a sprawl and it’s unfortunate we need to drive to fully explore this whimsical city, each neighborhood that you cut across/through has it’s own story, it’s own identity, AND each area is it’s own distinct culture (or a mix thereof)! Visited the Office of Collecting & Design this past weekend in San Pedro, as part of their west coast tour. They are essentially a curio cabinet on wheels, a custom retrofitted RV filled with strange and fascinating artifacts and detritus of all sorts. MotoArt is one of those truly fascinating places you stumble upon by happenstance, or at least I did. It must’ve been 10 years ago or so, I was riding my bike through El Segundo (kinda near Old Town Music Hall, another CCLA fav) and I noticed what looked like airplane wings & missiles or rockets standing upright and I thought what on earth is that place. I was able to sweet talk my way into their warehouse and experience them turning decommissioned airplane parts in to high-end furniture and sculptures. I met the owner Dave, a superb guy, and did a handful of tours with them during the time I created events for Atlas Obscura. What a gem! Check them out if you’re ever in the El Segundo area, but be sure to call/email ahead to make sure they’re open (and you can stop by). The museum’s chief curator, Joes, led us through the collection and filled us to the brim with Cold War knowledge and stories. We got to step inside the archival film room and then of course the art collection in storage. The event concluded in the outdoor sculpture garden. Woolly Mammoth is an absolutely fascinating curiosity shop in Chicago, filled to the brim with taxidermy, rustic relics, esoteric ephemera, strange specimens, and all sorts of antiquities. Constructed in 1908–1909 as a home for David B. Gamble, son of the Procter & Gamble founder James Gamble, it is today a National Historic Landmark, a California Historical Landmark, and open to the public for tours and events.” - Wikipedia page for Gamble house. Mt. Wilson Observatory - “In 1904, the Mount Wilson Observatory was founded by George Ellery Hale under the auspices of the Carnegie Institution of Washington. In that year, Hale brought the Snow Solar Telescope from Yerkes Observatory in southern Wisconsin to the sunnier and steadier skies of Mount Wilson to continue his studies of the Sun. With a small cadre of Yerkes scientists and engineers accompanying him, Hale started what would become the world’s foremost astronomical research facility. Hale put such importance on studying the Sun, that it was called the Mount Wilson Solar Observatory for the first decade and a half. In 1919, soon after the largest telescope in the world, the 100-inch, went into service photographing the stars and nebulae, the word “Solar” was dropped. Hubble used the 100-inch to make his great discoveries–that we are just one of many galaxies in an ever expanding Universe. This telescope lead directly to our current understanding of our origins, the Big Bang model.” - taken from the Mt Wilson website. I used to help run events up there with AO and I can attest to the magnificence and magnification of both the 60inch and 100inch scopes. Here’s a great spot to check out on a hot day, the museum of neon art (aka MONA) in Glendale, Ca. “MONA was founded as a 501(c)(3) non-profit art museum in 1981, by artists Lili Lakich and Richard Jenkins in downtown Los Angeles. Their intent was to create an awareness for historic neon sign preservation and to showcase this electrifying contemporary art form. After several relocations, (Universal CityWalk, Grand Hope Park and the Historic Core), the museum successfully negotiated a permanent home in the city of Glendale, where it anchors the southern end of the Arts and Entertainment Corridor. Throughout its 30+ year history, MONA has fostered an awareness of historic neon signage through its LUMENS project with the City of L.A. and its popular bus tour, the Neon Cruise™. MONA has witnessed the rise and fall of neon used by the sign industry and the current resurgence of neon used by creative artists and commercial designers today. The MONA facility in Glendale has a classroom on the premises where visitors can watch skilled neon craftspeople fabricating and processing the neon tube and take hands-on classes to learn this fascinating art form.“ - from the website. House on the Rock is by far one of the most fascinating places I’ve ever been!! I realize this is not a Los Angeles location, but growing up in the Midwest this place was such a huge inspiration for me as a kid and a reminder to always keep exploring. The History: “In 1960, Alex Jordan opened his dream house built atop a chimney of rock to the public. Over the years, Alex expanded his vision beyond the House and collected and built on a massive scale. What began as a lofty retreat with an awe-inspiring view has become a spectacular attraction known as The House on the Rock.” Located in Spring Green Wisconsin, the house is a true testament to one man’s/persons vision. It is a labyrinth of halls and rooms, each area filled with odd instruments, antique collections, old streets and storefronts recreated, and pieces from around the world… even a large cathedral-like room that showcases a huge (possibly even life-size) model/sculpture of a giant squid and a whale battling. But perhaps the most awe-inspiring space is towards the end of the maze-like tour where there’s “a dazzling one-of-a-kind carousel with 269 animals, 20,000 lights and 182 chandeliers.” Quotes taken from the website. Props from jAdis have appeared in many movies and shows, including the X-Files. “The Cave of Munits is a chimney cave in West Hills, Los Angeles, California that is thought to be the home of a mythical Chumash shaman or chief named Munits. According to local lore, Munits died near the cave after killing the son of a Chumash chief. The cave’s name comes from this legend, which is full of revenge, death, and dismemberment. The cave is located in El Escorpion Canyon Park, and the entrance is on Vanowen Street, about a tenth of a mile west of Valley Circle Boulevard. Some say the first part of the cave can be slippery and scary to climb, but the cave formations are beautiful and the high ceilings give it a cathedral-like feel. The cave has also been featured in the films Tarzan and the Golden Lion (1927) and The Canyon of Missing Men (1930).” - AI overview. This site is amazing! Kater Crafts Bookbinders was a small family-run business that for many years kept alive the art of fixing/refurbishing books… they were masters of their craft since 1948. Unfortunately, they closed shop in late 2023 after 75 years in the business! Nonetheless I felt compelled to post about them, because I ran several tours with them back in the day while working with Atlas Obscura, and they were an important part of the ever-growing/ever-shrinking craft world of LA. “Sunken City is the site of a natural landslide that occurred in the Point Fermin area of the San Pedro neighborhood of Los Angeles, beginning in 1929. A slump caused several beachside homes to slide into the ocean” - wikepedia. “Because the land was unstable for a time, and the remaining parts so steep, the area was fenced off and prohibited from public use. This rule is still in place today, though many visitors still come to see the other worldly scene that is now the Sunken City” - California Beaches. I’ve explored this sunken landscape several times and it never ceases to amaze me what landslides/seismic activity can do. Another absolute gem just outside of LA is Rubel Castle in Glendora, Ca. Rubel Castle is a monumental folk architecture site nestled in the foothills of Glendora. It was entirely built by hand by Michael Rubel and his “pharmhands” over several decades. Its stone masonry was handcrafted of river rock, recycled materials and an assemblage of the relics and artifacts of Glendora’s early agricultural and industrial eras. Michael’s innovative use of both natural and cultural materials makes Rubel Castle an exceptionally important masterwork within the context of folk art environments in California. It also serves as a rare resource and physical reminder of the citrus industry, which played a significant role in the development of the area in the late-nineteenth and early-twentieth centuries. One of my favorite, strange geological formations in California is Mono Lake (MOH-noh), which is a saline soda lake in Mono County, California. It formed at least 760,000 years ago as a terminal lake in an endorheic basin. The lack of an outlet causes high levels of salts to accumulate in the lake which make its water alkaline. The basin was formed by geological forces over the last five million years: basin and range crustal stretching and associated volcanism and faulting at the base of the Sierra Nevada. Subsurface waters enter the bottom of Mono Lake through small springs. High concentrations of dissolved calcium ions in these subsurface waters cause huge amounts of calcite to precipitate around the spring orifices. The tufa originally formed at the bottom of the lake. It took many decades or even centuries to form the well-recognized tufa towers. When lake levels fell, the tufa towers came to rise above the water surface and stand as the pillars seen today. Sunsets at Mono can be particularly incredible due to the lake’s unique composition and chemical qualities and the way the light interacts with the landscape (and the water). This spot is a treasure trove of early electronic music making machines!! One of my fav “hidden gems” on the Eastside is Mor York gallery in HP. Hidden in plain sight in an old hangar style warehouse building, Mor York is the work/creation of artist Clare Graham. Stepping inside is kinda like being transported to a carnival fun house, only it was constructed out of doll parts, soda can tabs, and other various discarded objects… replete with mirrors, convoluted contraptions, geared gadgets and random objects galore. Exploring the Albany Bulb, a former landfill owned by the city of Albany, across the bay from SF. Here you will find old remnants of ‘89 earthquake that shook the bay. At one point the bulb-shaped peninsula was home to 50-60 unhorsed people. Today, however, it is just home to a large amount of native and non-native vegetation, including lots of beautiful wild flowers, and several small to large scale art projects/installations. These photos hardly scratch the surface of what you’ll find out there. An easy trip over from SF and a modest 1-2 miles RT walk (depending on how much of the bulb you choose to explore). Hands down, one of the coolest sites I’ve explored in the Bay Area. Experience the Elegance
of Fancy Pigeons:
An Ornithological Occasion

Join us April 20th, for exclusive access to the private property of pigeon enthusiast and master breeder Drew Lobenstein. He will share personal experiences and captivating stories about these majestic birds in his backyard. We will get up-close and personal with a variety of fancy pigeons during this hands-on event. Then we will have time to explore the property, which is home to more than 500 feathered friends. The event will conclude with a dove release.

The Art of Noble Gases: Neon, Argon, Krypton, and Xenon, oh my!

On Dec 8th we had an exclusive tour of local, San Fernando Valley, Neon artist Michael Flechtner's studio. During this event, Michael gave us a full tour of his private studio where he creates all his Neon works of art. He then gave us a live demo, in which he created a fully functional piece of neon before our very eyes. Attendees had the opportunity to bend their own piece of neon glass tubing, which they got to take home as a souvenir. It was absolutely BRILLIANT!
